Hélène Rosato-Rossi, founder and chairman of Les Laboratoires Hélénère, has spent her entire career on finding ways to eliminate wrinkles. And with her new Black Pearl line, she may have just found it.

She likes to talk in superlatives and when she describes her new Black Pearl line, which uses actual ground black pearls in its formulation, it just doesn’t remove wrinkles, it’s also rejuvenating, cooling, lifting, radiating, healing ….

“We call it the miracle cream of my line.”

Black Pearl is the first of a series of products to be launched in coming months. The next is a White Pearl formulation, to be introduced later this year.
Her quest is part of a deep-seated belief that no one has to look old – no matter how old they are when they can do something about it and “there are so many possibilities to look younger today.”

“Your skin is like a plant,” she told a recent gathering of spa owners in Toronto to introduce the Black Pearl line. “Your skin needs to be hydrated, just as plants need to watered.” In fact, she added, if you treat your skin right, there’s really no need for make-up.

“We haven’t tested it yet for scaring but when we were testing it for stretch marks, one of the women in the test put it on her face and she saw her wrinkles disappear.”

Crushed black pearl was first used in China to heal wounds. By the time it reached Europe in 1767, it was also used to preserve beauty and delay the ageing process.

Two months before launching Black Pearl, Hélène and one of her long-time friends went on a holiday to Thailand. “I told her not to bring all her creams on the trip – just the sample of Black Pearl I had given her. Then, I forgot all about it. I saw her again a week before I came to Canada. I couldn’t believe what I saw.
What happened to your skin? I asked her. It’s so beautiful. I’ve never seen you like this.

“It’s your Black Pearl, she told me.”
That’s why I tell people – just try it.”

Now 68, and wrinkle-free, Hélène was one of the first people to test Black Pearl. “It’s everything we say it is.”

Black Pearl is essentially a lifting cream that fights ageing and the signs of ageing, including wrinkles. Its ingredients include sodium hyaluronic, which helps preserve the skin’s suppleness, elasticity, and gives energy to the skin.

It also contains hydrolyzed polysaccharides and acacia gum, which help to contract the skin – basically tightening it. As the Black Pearl cream is used, the skin gets tighter and tighter and collagen starts to form beneath the epidermis, reducing the depth of the wrinkles and relaxing the skin so that it can heal and delay the ageing process.

When used on the skin, these ingredients form a kind of mesh that dries on the skin and causes a lifting action, pulling the skin and the wrinkle together.

Another ingredient, collagen synthesis, a peptide, mimics the body and what it does. In this case, it wakes up the body’s natural collagen by signaling it to start producing.

Its cooling properties come from the water in the Plantago plant, which grows in the Alps. It’s important, she says, because when you put on the cream and feel the lifting, it makes you feel better just because of the cooling effect.

“It’s a shock treatment in a way. When you put serum – day and night cream – the lifting is fantastic in every part of your face … it even eliminates the need for a special eye cream.”

The shining effects of the new cream reflect the light, giving a special radiance to the skin.

It’s also an effective treatment for acne. In fact, says Hélène, it can cure acne in 15 days. How? From the medicinal qualities of the Plantago extract, derived from Ribwart Plantain, which reduces inflammation and stimulates the production of collagen in its early stages.

Inside Ribwart are anti-oxidants that “neutralize all things that shouldn’t be there”. Its anti-inflammatory powers calm down the inflammation caused by acne or skin problems like Rosacea and signals the skin cells to start the healing process.

It also possesses anti-microbial properties that can penetrate the smallest cells to give it better penetration. You have to kill off all the toxins, as in acne, to get the collagen synthesis working.

In addition to her Black Pearl line, Hélénère produces 10 other lines that address a variety of skin problems and skin types.

“My cellular line, designed for dry skin, would be fantastic for Canadian women because of Canada’s cold, dry winters. It hydrates the skin … and right away, your wrinkles fade,” said Hélène.

Other lines include:

Deep Purifying line: Great for acne-prone and oily skin.

Bio Line: For dry to normal skin. It prevents skin ageing, regenerates and firms.

Futurissima Line: Designed for tired, lifeless skin. It takes dead cells off the skin and basically rejuvenates it, builds up oxygen in the skin cells and makes the skin glow and look more vibrant.

Hedelweiss Line: For normal skin. It prevents skin ageing, regenerates and firms.

Hypoallergrenic Line: Works for delicate and sensitive skin. It soothes skin irritations and maintains skin hydration.

White Perfection: Effective for skin with sunspots, age spots and pregnancy marks. Prevents melanin accumulation.

Intensive Care treatments: For individuals with early ageing skin, caused by hormone imbalance or for individuals who are just not in good health. “Some people just age faster than others.”
Hélénère’s Body Care Line is designed to keep the rest of your body hydrated and moisturized. Good for all skin types. Hélène knew what she wanted to do with her life when she turned 15. She told her mother she wanted to go to Paris and become a beautician. Her mother had other ideas and a few years later, she married and had three children.

But it was always in her heart and when she returned to Switzerland after living nine years in Peru where he husband had been stationed, she decided to do something about it.
Ironically, it came about almost by accident. Hélène , who had been born in Egypt, recalled an old remedy for hair removal in Egypt. One day in Greece, she discovered they were selling this hair removal remedy in small packets. She brought a few packets back to Switzerland. Her first visit was to one of the big Swiss labs, which told her she should use it as a base to create her own formulation and her own brand.

The year was 1987, the year Les Laboratories Hélénère was born. Since then, her company has become a major player in the industry and its products are sold in spas around the world.

Hélénère products are distributed in Canada by IBS Distribution, Markham.
